JOHAN TAHON

Der belgische Künstler Johan Tahon thematisiert in seinem Werk die Suche des Menschen nach Spiritualität und Transzendenz und dessen Unvollkommenheit in Bezug auf das Universum und das Göttliche.

Die Skulpturen von Johan Tahon sind kraftvoll und ausdrucksstark. Obwohl sie auf eigenständige Weise entstehen wurzeln sie in Kunstwerken und Mythen der Vergangenheit. Seine Figuren, oft als keramische Plastik gearbeitet, vermitteln ein Hin und Her zwischen Intellekt und Emotion, bedrohlicher Ruhe und meditativer Stille, Verletzlichkeit und Stärke, Schmerz und Zärtlichkeit. Sie weisen direkt auf das Wesentliche und wollen die Dichte und Komplexität des menschlichen Daseins ausdrücken, entblößt, rau und karg. Einige Skulpturen sind durchbohrt und punktiert, als ob sie einen Zugang zu anderen Welten eröffnen, die die Arbeiten widerzuspiegeln scheinen. Johan Tahon integriert in seinem Werk bewusst Einflüsse der europäischen Kunstgeschichte und ägyptischer, afrikanischer und fernöstlicher Skulpturen. Neben dem Ausdruck ist für den Künstler die bildhauerische Qualität ein wichtiger Aspekt. Der Gestaltungsprozess ist offensichtlich und nachvollziehbar. Die Konstruktion und die Verarbeitung bleiben ebenso gut sichtbar wie die Hand des Künstlers. Bei seinen geformten Skulpturen lässt er den Guss intakt erscheinen. Er mischt seine eigene Glasur, so dass sie dünn genug ist, um zu tropfen, und gerade dick genug, um zu kleben. Die Glasuren bedecken die Oberfläche, als wären Nerven blossgelegt. Matt und durchdringend bleiben die Augen konsequent unglasiert. Johan Tahons Figuren sind fragmentarisch, verformt und reduziert und können als Hinweis auf die Gefährdung des Menschen verstanden werden.

Im Wesentlichen bildet Johan Tahons Werk eine kontinuierliche Suche nach einer höheren Wahrheit und einer tiefen Sensibilität für den existenziellen Zustand der Menschheit. Da diese Suche oder dieser Drang aus seinem tiefsten Wesen kommt, ist er in der Lage, uns auch ins Innerste zu bewegen.

Johan Tahon (*1965, lebt und arbeitet in Belgien), studierte Bildhauerei an der Königlichen Akademie der Schönen Künste in Gent. Der international renommierte Künstler stellt seit 1994 regelmässig in Belgien und im Ausland aus. In der Schweiz waren 2019 seine Ausstellungen _Kalklicht_ in der Galerie Kunstforum Solothurn und _Refuge / Silence_ im Musée Ariana in Genf zu sehen.

Seit diesem Jahr ist Johan Tahon mit seinem Werk _Métanoia_ in der Sammlung des Vatikans vertreten. _Silver Valley_, eine Version von _Métanoia_ mit Platinglasur, wird in der Ausstellung _The Sculptor_ in der Galerie Kunstforum Solothurn ausgestellt sein.

The sculptures of Johan Tahon are powerful and expressive. Though evolving in an original and individual way, they are rooted first of all in artworks and myths of the past. His figures are seeking neither to seduce nor to deceive, they go straight to the essential and aim to express the density and complexity of the human condition, stripped down, rough and barren. Some sculptures are pierced and punctured, as if they give access to all those other worlds the work seems to echo. It contains idolatry of some sort, or a spiritual necessity to reach for higher grounds, like those stunning historical examples the Sfinx, icons and totems. But there is also a futuristic element present in the figures of Tahon. Cosmonauts they seem, hybrid entities with androgyne features.

The construction and craftsmanship remain clearly visible, as does the hand of the artist. Tahon works from a certain unpredictability. In his moulded sculptures he leaves the casting seems intact. He mixes his own glaze, making it thin enough to drip, and just thick enough to stick. The drippings in all shades of white cover the surface as if nerves are laid bare. Mat and piercing, the eyes consistently remain unglazed. Simultaneously Tahon has developed a meticulous working method, making works in which all notions of coincidence are rather conversions of a deep and almost tangible energy: spiritual, mystic, and philosophical. In essence Tahon’s work forms a continuous quest towards a higher truth and a deep sensibility for the existential state of humanity. Because this quest, or urge, comes from his deepest being, Tahon is capable of also moving us to the core.

Johan Tahon was born in Menen (Belgium) in 1965. He studied sculpture at the Ghent Royal Academy of Fine Arts (BE). Since 1994 Johan Tahon exhibits his work on a regular basis in Belgium as well as abroad. In 1996, he caught the attention of Belgium’s most influential curator and museum director Jan Hoet (e.g. Documenta 9), who made it possible for Tahon to interact with world level artists in the internationally renowned exhibition De Rode Poort in the Ghent Museum of Contemporary Art (with a.o. Luc Tuymans, Vito Acconci and Sam Taylor-Wood). From then on Tahon got the full support of Hoet and Tahon started exhibiting his work at different galleries and in prominent museums across Europe, solo or combined with works of a.o. Ilya Kabakov, Günther Förg, Tony Cragg and Stephan Balkenhol. 

He took part in major exhibitions like Beaufort (Ostend, BE) and Lustwarande (Tilburg, NL) and showed his sculptures at places like the Ministry of Finance (The Hague, NL), the Gerhard Marcks Haus (Bremen, DE), the Academia Belgica (Rome, IT), the courtyard of the Topkapi Palace (Istanbul, TR), the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington DC, USA) and the Istanbul Biennial (TR).
